When you prepare for your umrah trip, you want to make sure that you’ve packed properly. Below is a checklist of what you’ll need.
1. Hand luggage

ð Small shoulder bag - To put your money and any essentials in while performing Umrah and to use on your journey
ð Good quality slippers - To wear in ihraam
ð Travel prayer mat - For any Salah that comes during your journey
ð Coloured marker - To label zamzam on way back
ð Du’a books - To take a look at while at the airport or while on flight
ð Notebook, pen - To note anything down, to keep list of peoples’ du’as
ð Snacks - It’s a long journey – you’ll get hungry
ð Non-fragranced soap - For washing hands while in ihraam
ð Empty water bottle - To use in the bathroom
ð Travel sickness medication - If needed
ð Travel money / credit, debit cards
ð Travel documents – see next section

Note: Make two photocopies of all travel documents to keep in check-in luggage in case needed and to give to next-of-kin
3. Backpack for when in Saudi
ð Backpack - A backpack is very handy for when out and about and when doing tawaf. It is not recommended to put your cash or other valuable items in it as it can be very easy for pickpockets to get access to them.
ð Shades - The white marbled floor reflects the sun’s rays strongly in Makkah.
ð Drawstring bag - For putting your slippers in when you enter both mosques in Makkah and Madinah
ð Hand sanitiser - In case you go to eat and there’s no place to wash hands
ð Small pale coloured umbrella - For protection from the scorching sun
ð Pocket prayer mat - Parts of the Mosque in Makkah has no carpet
ð Dust mask - For protecting throats and lungs and to prevent yourself from contracting viruses. Needed especially when in crowded areas.
ð Travel water bottle - You’ll get thirsty often while out and about. You can refill your bottle with the zamzam drums from both of the holy Mosques
ð Pocket tissues
ð Snacks - In case you get hungry while out and about
ð Prayer books
ð Tasbeeh
ð Small towel - In case you need to do wudhu while out of your hotel
4. Clothes
ð Abayas / thobes - Depending on length of stay. NOTE: You can purchase abayas and thobes at good prices in Makkah and Madinah, so if you don’t have many, don’t worry!

ð Nightwear
ð Trousers
ð Few pairs of socks - The marble tiles in Makkah and Madinah can get very cold on occasions so it’s a good idea to wear socks around this area.
ð Clothes for flight back - Including cardigan or jumper
ð Warm clothing - If you are travelling between October and February as it does get chilly
ð Women: Hijaabs, undercaps, pins - Do take pins to secure your hijab. There could be pushing and shoving, you don’t want your hijab to come off.
5. Shoes
ð Comfortable travel shoes
ð Bathroom slippers - For when staying in hotel
ð Comfortable walking sandals - For when out and about and doing ziyaarah
6. Toiletries
ð Toothbrush
ð Toothpaste
ð Comb / hairbrush
ð Shower gel
ð Shampoo
ð Soap
ð Deodorant - NOTE: you are not allowed to use any fragranced deodorant, soap, shampoo, toothpaste in the state of ihraam
ð Cream / lotion - Dry weather will dry out your skin
ð SPF lotion - For protecting your skin from sunburn
ð Nail cutter
ð Body wipes
ð Razors - If needed
ð Vaseline - Inner thigh chafing is a problem often faced by men whilst in Ihram. Applying Vaseline between the thighs helps prevent chaffing
ð For Women: Sanitary towels and pantiliners
7. Medication
ð Paracetamol
ð Muscle rub (deep heat)
ð Plasters - For cuts, burns and blisters. You’ll be walking a lot, so it is likely that you may develop blisters
ð Imodium or any diarrhoea medication
ð Throat sweets
ð Any other medication you take
8. Electricals
ð Basic phone
ð Phone charger
ð Travel iron - If needed
ð Travel hairdryer - If needed
ð Travel adapter
ð Earphones
ð For men: Shaving machine - If needed
9. Other
ð Photocopies of all your documents - In case you need them. Put them in your check-in luggage, as you will already have the actual copies in your hand luggage
ð Extra suitcase - If you end up buying a lot of gifts, dates or clothing, you’ll need more suitcases (check your airlines luggage allowance)
ð Washing powder - To hand-wash your hijabs, abayas/thobes and undergarments. Getting your laundry done by the hotel can be costly and these things can dry in your room with the Air Conditioning on whilst you are out
ð Padlocks for suitcases - To lock your suitcases
ð Luggage tags - Luggage does tend to get lost. Write all information on your luggage tags clearly so that your luggage can be returned to you if it gets lost
ð Towels - Hotels generally provide towels, but take some in case you need them
ð Toilet tissue rolls - Just in case your hotel does not replenish them
ð Black bin bags - To put dirty clothes
ð Cleaning wipes - In case you need them
ð Food - Cereal bars, nuts, tinned fruit, biscuits
ð Alarm clock - If needed
ð Hard plastic bowls and glasses
ð Folding chair - If needed
ð For women: a small scissor - For cutting your hair in order to come out of ihraam
If you do forget to take anything, there are big stores near both Holy Mosques like Bin Dawood that sell almost everything you’ll need.
NOTE: Ensure your luggage is good quality. Suitcases do get thrown around a lot.
